Reducing Heavy Masses

When we re-design parts, we look at using thinner walls and rib reinforcement to reduce weight and eliminate heavy mass concentrations.

In the example above, the boss (1) is poor due to the heavy mass of material in the walls, which leads to porosity and increased cycle times. The boss in (2) is better, with a more uniform wall thickness, and the heavy walls have been replaced by ribs. The boss in (3) is also better, requiring no movable cores or core slides.
